The Priory (Priorat in Catalan and officially) is a region straddling the Camp de Tarragona and the Ebro, which borders the counties of the Lower House, the Ribera de Ebro, the Basin Garrigas and Barbera.
It is situated between the Sierra de Montsant, north, and the combination of the Mola Colldejou, saw Llavería and the Sierra de Santa Marina, south.
It is a region of continental climate, dry and hot in summer and cold in winter. In its central area, the geology of the region is characterized by rocks of Carboniferous age with a varying degree of metamorphism (mainly shales).
Precisely on the central sector of the region, known as the "historic Priorat", cultivates the vineyard. The wine is produced, has the appellation of origin (DOC) Priory. One of the most appreciated wines in the world. The people who are not DOC Priorat (Falset-Marsà, Capsanes, etc.). Produce wine which is sold under Montsant appellation of origin.
The Priory has lost a lot of people during the twentieth century. However, modern collecting some demographic recovery, linked to economic recovery in the region.
